Mid-19th-Century British School, Coastal Nocturne With PierThis mid 19th century British oil painting depicts a moonlit coastal view with turbulent sea, pier, sailboats and overcast sky. Irrepressible waves batter the coastline as a stricken vessel struggles amid the elements. Its a dramatic scene under a menacing sky. Lamplight from a source on the pier provides guidance for approaching crew, while the partially covered moon emits an atmospheric glow. The work has previously been attributed to George Stone

The portrait is unsigned but it's clearly by a well-trained hand

the scene would be entirely unaltered

Born amid the vigour of East End London

So could we assume that the appearance of ‘the Blenheim’ in this portrait is a reference to the Duke

which consists of a bell-shaped green dress with sloping shoulders and flared wide sleeves

The composition is particularly reminiscent of those by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875)
