The fine plates depict plants arranged by botanical families using de Candolle's classification

above the central pillar flanked by three finely carved

over the panelled frieze

the porcelain Japan

and each plate includes between two and seven members of each family

together with its spectacularly figured and well patinated burl amboyna faded to a splendid golden colour
